Packing Tape for Card Making

When someone shared this novel use of packing tape, my first thought was WOW! and my second was ‘who thinks of these things?”. By placing packing tape over an image before die cutting or punch it out, the image becomes shiny like a glossy sticker.

This card uses the Trusty Tools stamp set and dies plus the Deckled Rectangle Dies. The tape measure is stamped on Smoky Slate paper and then colored with Real Red and Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Write Markers before the packing tape is added. The other tools are stamped on Smoky Slate and then have the packing tape added and are die cut, while the handles are stamped with Real Red ink on Real Red paper and die cut without adding any packing tape to give the appearance of cushioned handles. See this technique on my Creating Card Elements with Packing Tape Video Tutorial.

The inside is decorated with some screws and bolts and a Father’s Day greeting.

Here is a second card created using this technique and the Legendary Ride stamp set and dies. The motorcycle is die cut twice once from Blueberry Bushel cardstock and once from Smoky Slate. Both versions are covered with packing tape before die cutting. Then the headlight, motor, and exhaust pipe are trimmed off the Slate version and glued over the Blueberry one. The outline die of the bike is die cut from Basic Black without packing tape added for the base of the motorcycle. The rims are die cut, with packing tape added, from Smoky Slate paper. Basic Black tires are die cut, also with packing tape (but maybe I would try one, leaving the tires without packing tape?). The Basic Black seat is also done with packing tape.

The Real Red background is die cut with one of the Countryside Corners Dies and a strip of the retired Ready to Ride Specialty Paper is used for the road. A stamp positioned was used to stamp the greeting multiple times to get is nice and black. It was my son Ethan’s idea to have the bike up on one wheel, I thought it did go well with the greeting, lol.

Below are links to purchase the products used to create these cards. The packing tape used is just clear 2″ packing tape available at any hardware or big box store.
