Christmas Candy Day

Today, instead of making a card, I’m working on some Christmas candy. This year I’m not doing the whole smorgasbord of delights, but just a few family favorites. They are right out of the BetterHomes and Gardens “New Cook Book”. I laugh when I read the spine because I’ve owned this cook book for 35 years, not exactly ‘new’ anymore. It’s one of my favorite cook books though. Yes, I do still use paper cook books! Sometimes I go online to find a new recipe but I still keep my old favorites close, on a bookshelf right in the kitchen.

The Peanut Brittle is cooling and waiting to be cracked into pieces and placed in a pretty Christmas Tin.

Cherries draining on a piece of paper towel. The drier the better for Chocolate Covered Cherries! Thanks to my neighbor, Patty Falk, I didn’t have to make a dash into town to get more Corn Syrup! I forgot that the cherries needed 3 tablespoons and used it all in the Peanut Brittle.

So, while the cherries are chillin’ I thought I would work on my blog post. They still need a coating of chocolate, but it works much easier if they are nice and stiff. It might be tomorrow morning before they get their final coat. I’m still debating if I should make a batch of Buckeyes. I haven’t made them in several years but the hand typed (like from an actual typewriter) recipe fell out of my Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book today. I think maybe Florence (mother-in-law) was telling me from heaven that I should make those. I could almost hear her voice. They were always a favorite of the kids. Peanut Butter, Graham Crackers and Chocolate, what’s not to love, right?

The count down to Christmas is on! I’m just enjoying baking and candy making. Whatever gets done, gets done right? I’m actually not too stressed. I am a bit excited about some news that I got yesterday. I’ll post some pictures soon, so stay tuned.
